ChatGPT maker OpenAI to acquire Bellevue startup in $1.1B deal

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced plans to purchase Bellevue-based product testing startup Statsig in an all-stock deal valued at $1.1 billion. It is OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date.

Founded in 2021, Statsig builds tools that helps software developers test and monitor new product features. Its services have been used by employees at companies including OpenAI, Eventbrite, and SoundCloud. Statsig raised $100 million in funding earlier this year at a $1.1 billion valuation.

As part of the acquisition, Statsig founder and CEO Vijaye Raji will join OpenAI as chief technology officer of applications. OpenAI said Statsig will continue to operate in the Seattle area after the deal closes.

This acquisition comes during a period of rapid expansion for OpenAI. The company pursued several large purchases this year, including a $6.5 billion deal for an AI device startup co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. As of this month, OpenAI is valued at $500 billion.

Statsig’s addition strengthens OpenAI’s presence in the Seattle region, where the company is already competing with Microsoft, Amazon, and other major players in the artificial intelligence boom.
