UW No. 8 in Global Ranking of Best Universities

With the release of US News & World Report’s 2021 Best Global Universities Rankings, the University of Washington has again asserted itself as a world-class institution. This year, the university jumped up to no. 8 on the list, beating out notable universities such as Cambridge University, Johns Hopkins, Princeton and Yale.

Within the United States, UW retains its ranking as the second best public institution in the nation.

Of particular note, UW was highly ranked across multiple subject areas, including no. 5 in Geosciences, no. 6 in Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Surgery worldwide. The university also scored high in Social Sciences and Public Health, and Microbiology — coming in at no. 7 and 8 respectively. Finally, UW cracked the top ten for Pharmacology and Toxicology, no. 8, and Computer Science, no. 9.

Taking into account the ongoing pandemic, it’s certainly beneficial to Seattle and the surrounding area that UW is globally ranked in various medical fields, and particularly in Infectious Diseases and Social Sciences and Public Health. The university’s high ranking in Computer Science is also telling, given the many tech companies and startups that call the region home.

At the top of the list, UW keeps prestigious company. Harvard is the top-ranked university in the world. Following that, other top schools include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, Oxford and Columbia. The methodology for the rankings includes each university’s global and regional research reputation, academic performance, publications and international collaboration.

For Huskies everywhere, this can be considered both an honor and business as usual…simply another win for the Dawgs.
